Itanagar, June 5: VKV Itanagar commemorated World Environment Day 2025 with a vibrant array of events and activities centered around this year’s theme, “Our Land – Our Future.” The programme aimed to instill awareness about environmental restoration and the role of youth in sustainable development. Students from across all classes participated enthusiastically, making the event a grand success.
The highlight of the celebration was the impressive participation of 74 students selected for four major events: model presentation, quiz competition, extempore speech, and art-based presentations. These students were selected from the total participants by their respective class teachers. A total of 43 students showcased their creativity through eco-friendly models crafted from biodegradable or recycled materials. These models reflected topics such as tree plantation, sustainable land use, and the 5Rs – Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repurpose, and Recycle – emphasizing the importance of responsible environmental stewardship.
The quiz competition, which witnessed participation from 11 students, tested their knowledge on global and national environmental challenges and solutions. The event served as an excellent platform to reinforce the importance of being informed and proactive citizens in the fight against climate change and land degradation.
In the extempore speech competition, 20 selected students from the senior sections expressed their thoughts on land restoration, afforestation, and sustainable agriculture. Their speeches, delivered without prior preparation, demonstrated confidence, clarity, and a deep understanding of ecological issues. This segment highlighted the voices of the youth as crucial contributors to environmental action.
A drawing and painting segment was also planned as part of the creative segment, and primary students from Class IV & V participated in the same. Many of these were the model-maker participants as well.
Throughout the day, the campus of VKV Itanagar echoed with messages of ecological balance, sustainability, and community action. The efforts of the teachers, especially the class coordinators, were commendable in guiding and supporting the students in both preparation and presentation. Strict adherence to eco-friendly practices was maintained, with an emphasis on avoiding plastic, thermocol, and other non-biodegradable materials.
As part of the Environment Day celebrations, a plantation drive was also initiated in and around the school campus. Students and teachers came together to plant saplings of native trees and flowering plants, reinforcing the message that “Trees Are Life – Let’s Plant More!” The drive aimed not only to beautify the surroundings but also to contribute tangibly to environmental restoration. Each class took responsibility for designated spots within the campus, ensuring collective ownership and long-term care of the green spaces. This hands-on activity served as a practical extension of classroom learning and instilled a deeper sense of environmental responsibility among the students.
The programme concluded with words of encouragement from the school leadership, who praised the students’ efforts and reiterated the importance of continuing these initiatives beyond Environment Day. The event not only celebrated the environment but also empowered young minds to take active roles in protecting it, proving once again that the future of our planet lies in informed, passionate, and responsible hands.
